Synopsis/Plot
The Diary of a Teenage Girl is a 2015 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Marielle Heller, based on the novel of the same name by Phoebe Gloeckner. The film stars Bel Powley as a 15-year-old aspiring cartoonist, Minnie Goetze, who embarks on an affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård). The film follows Minnie as she navigates the confusing and turbulent world of teenage sexuality, and her journey of self-discovery.
The film begins with Minnie, a 15-year-old girl living in San Francisco in 1976. She is an aspiring cartoonist, and her diary serves as a way for her to express her thoughts and feelings. One night, she meets Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), her mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend, and the two embark on a secret sexual relationship. Minnie’s journey of self-discovery is complicated by her complicated relationships with her mother, Monroe, her best friend Kimmie (Madeleine Waters), and her crush, Rich (Abraham Clinkscales).
