Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Devil and Max Devlin”
The Devil and Max Devlin is a 1981 comedy-drama film starring Elliott Gould and Bill Cosby.
The film follows Max Devlin (Gould), a selfish and greedy businessman who dies in a car accident and is sent to Hell. There, he meets the Devil, played by Cosby, who offers him a deal. If Max can get three people to willingly go to Hell, he will be allowed to return to Earth. Max agrees and is sent back to Earth, where he goes about trying to convince three people to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Max’s first target is Julie (Susan Swift), a young woman who is about to marry the wrong man. Max tries to convince her to give up her chance at happiness and go to Hell with him. His next target is Barney (Adam Rich), a young boy who is about to commit a crime. Max attempts to persuade him to accept his fate and go to Hell. Finally, Max attempts to convince an old woman (Doris Roberts) to give up her chance at Heaven and go to Hell with him.
Throughout the film, Max’s attempts to convince these three people to go to Hell are met with various obstacles, including his own conscience. In the end, Max learns the importance of selflessness and redemption, and ultimately succeeds in his mission.
