Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Death of Stalin”
The Death of Stalin is a 2017 political satire black comedy film, directed by Armando Iannucci, based on the French graphic novel La Mort de Staline. The film takes place in the Soviet Union in 1953, and follows the chaotic events that take place after the death of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin.
The film begins with a radio broadcast of a Moscow Symphony Orchestra concert that is interrupted by a news bulletin announcing Stalin’s death. This sets off a flurry of activity among the Soviet leadership, as they scramble to secure their positions of power. Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi) and Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale) are among the most ambitious of the power players, and they quickly begin to jockey for control of the government.
Meanwhile, Stalin’s body is being prepared for burial, and his funeral is quickly arranged. The event is attended by a massive crowd of mourners, including the Soviet leadership and foreign dignitaries. After the funeral, the power struggle intensifies, as Khrushchev and Beria battle for control. The two men clash over their different visions for the future of the Soviet Union, and their rivalry threatens to tear the country apart.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of Stalin’s hapless son, Vasily (Rupert Friend). Vasily is the only one who knows the truth about his father’s death, but he is too afraid to speak up. As the
