The Death & Life of John F. Donovan is a 2019 drama directed by Xavier Dolan that follows the life and death of a rising Hollywood star, John F. Donovan.
The film begins with John F. Donovan (Kit Harington) at the peak of his career. He is a young actor who is quickly becoming a household name due to his starring role in a popular TV series. Despite his fame and fortune, John is struggling to find true happiness and is struggling with his own inner demons.
The film then flashes back to 10 years earlier when John was just starting out in Hollywood. At this time, he is a young and naive actor who is trying to make it in the cut-throat world of show business. He is befriended by a young girl, Rupert (Théodore Pellerin), who is a fan of his show. The two quickly become close friends, and John begins to confide in Rupert about his inner struggles.
The film then jumps forward to the present, where John is now a successful actor. However, his inner struggles have only gotten worse. He begins to receive threatening letters from an anonymous source, and his life starts to unravel. After a series of events, John is found dead in a hotel room, and the cause of death is ruled a suicide.
