Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Dark Mirror”
The Dark Mirror is a psychological thriller released in 1946 starring Olivia de Havilland as twin sisters, Terry and Ruth Collins. Terry is a successful doctor while Ruth is a criminal who has been recently released from prison. When a murder occurs, the police are suspicious of the two sisters and believe that one of them is the killer.
Detective Laird (Lew Ayres) is assigned to the case and he quickly discovers that the two sisters are identical twins. He then devises a plan to use the sisters to trick the murderer into confessing. He sets up a meeting between the two sisters and the murderer, pretending that one of them is the other.
The plan works and the murderer confesses, but the police are still not sure which sister is the killer. Terry and Ruth are both arrested and put on trial. During the trial, Terry and Ruth’s relationship is put to the test as they are forced to testify against each other.
In the end, it is revealed that Ruth was the murderer and Terry was innocent. Terry is released and she and Ruth reconcile, but their relationship is forever changed. The Dark Mirror is a suspenseful and thrilling look at the complex relationship between two sisters and the lengths one will go to protect the other.
