Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Countess”
The Countess tells the story of Erzsébet Báthory, a 16th century Hungarian countess who is said to be the most prolific female serial killer of all time.
The film opens with Erzsébet (Julie Delpy) in her castle, surrounded by her loyal servants and her young daughters. She is a powerful figure, respected and feared by all who know her. But her power is threatened when a young peasant girl accuses her of taking her daughter away from her. The accusation brings out the dark side of Erzsébet, and her servants quickly realize that she is capable of anything.
Erzsébet is determined to protect her power and reputation, and she sets out to find the girl and her daughter. She soon discovers that her accuser is a witch, and she believes that the witch has cursed her. Desperate to break the curse, Erzsébet begins to take matters into her own hands.
Erzsébet begins to torture and kill the young women of her village, believing that their blood will cleanse her of the curse. But as her actions become more and more extreme, her loyal servants are forced to confront her and try to stop her.
The Countess is a powerful and gripping story about a woman’s descent into madness and violence. It is a story of power, obsession, and the dark consequences of unchecked ambition.
