Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Contender”
The Contender is a 2000 political drama film directed by Rod Lurie. The film follows the story of Senator Laine Hanson (Joan Allen), a highly qualified and respected politician who is nominated for Vice President of the United States.
The story begins when President Jackson Evans (Jeff Bridges) nominates Senator Hanson for Vice President. However, her nomination quickly becomes embroiled in controversy when her political opponents, led by Senator Shelly Runyon (Gary Oldman), launch a smear campaign against her, alleging that she had a sexual encounter with a college professor when she was in her twenties.
As the media and public pressure mounts, Senator Hanson is forced to confront her past and defend her character. She is aided by her loyal friend and confidante, White House Chief of Staff, Rachel Holloman (Christian Slater).
The Contender follows Senator Hanson as she navigates the treacherous political waters, facing off against her opponents in a series of debates and interviews. With each new challenge, she proves her strength and integrity, and in the process, earns the respect of the nation.
Ultimately, Senator Hanson is able to overcome her opponents and is confirmed as Vice President. As she takes the oath of office, the nation is reminded of the importance of having strong, principled leaders. The Contender is a powerful story of courage, integrity, and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
