Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Company Men”
The Company Men is a 2010 drama set in the present day. It follows the lives of three men, Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck), Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones), and Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper), who are all executives at a large shipbuilding company. After the company suffers a huge financial setback, Bobby, Gene, and Phil are all laid off. The three men must then grapple with the harsh realities of the current job market, and the effects of the economic downturn on their families and their own personal lives.
Bobby, the youngest of the three, is the first to be laid off. He is forced to take a job as a salesman at a much lower salary than he was used to, and he struggles to adjust to his new life. Gene, the oldest of the three, is the most devastated by the layoff. He is determined to fight against the company’s decision to lay him off, and he attempts to get his job back. Phil, the middle-aged executive, is forced to take a job as a carpenter, and he is humbled by the experience.
The three men must eventually come to terms with their new lives and the changes that come with them. They must learn to cope with the financial stress of unemployment, and how to manage their relationships with their families and friends.
