The film opens with Celie as a young girl living with her abusive father and her beloved sister, Nettie. Celie is forced into an arranged marriage to a man named Albert Johnson, who already has two children from a previous marriage. Celie is subjected to further abuse and degradation by Albert, who is unfaithful and has a violent temper. Meanwhile, Nettie flees to Africa to serve as a missionary and is unable to return.
Celie eventually finds solace in the friendship of two strong-willed women, Sofia and Shug Avery. Sofia is an independent and outspoken woman who is married to Harpo, Celie’s brother-in-law. Shug Avery is a jazz singer and Albert’s former lover. Through their friendship, Celie
