Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Chase”
The Chase is a 1966 American drama film directed by Arthur Penn and starring Marlon Brando, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, and Angie Dickinson. The film follows a desperate and destitute Vietnam War veteran, Bubber Reeves (Brando), who returns home to a small Texas town and takes a job as a chauffeur for a wealthy family. His employer, Sheriff Calder (Redford), is a powerful and corrupt man who uses his position of authority to manipulate and control those around him.
Bubber’s life is further complicated when he falls in love with Calder’s wife, Anna (Fonda), and the two begin an affair. Meanwhile, Calder’s brother, Charlie (E.G. Marshall), is determined to bring the sheriff to justice for his many misdeeds. When Calder discovers the affair, he frames Bubber for a crime and sets out to hunt him down.
Bubber and Anna take off on a desperate cross-country chase, pursued by Calder and his men. Along the way, they encounter a variety of characters, including an old war buddy (Robert Duvall) and a mysterious hitchhiker (Dickinson). As the chase intensifies, Bubber and Anna must confront their own inner demons and confront the truth about their relationship.
