Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Champ”
The Champ is a 1979 American drama film directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway, and Ricky Schroder. The film is about a former boxer, played by Voight, who is struggling to make ends meet and provide for his young son, played by Schroder.
The story begins with Billy Flynn (Voight) being released from prison after serving a sentence for a crime he committed to support his family. Upon his release, he returns to his small hometown in Louisiana and reunites with his son, T.J. (Schroder). T.J. has been living with his wealthy grandmother, Annie (Dunaway), who is determined to keep the father and son apart.
Billy is determined to make a better life for himself and his son and starts training as a boxer again in the hopes of making enough money to provide for them. While training, Billy meets a woman named Annie (Dunaway) and the two quickly fall in love.
Despite his best efforts, Billy’s past catches up with him and he is forced to face a difficult decision: continue to fight to make a better life for himself and his son, or give up and accept his past. In the end, Billy chooses to fight and goes on to become a champion boxer.
