Synopsis/Plot
The Caine Mutiny is a 1954 American war film directed by Edward Dmytryk and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Herman Wouk. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, José Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray, Robert Francis, and Tom Tully.
The film follows the story of the World War II minesweeper USS Caine and its crew, led by the unstable and tyrannical Captain Queeg. Queeg’s erratic behavior and lack of respect for his crew soon leads to a mutiny led by the executive officer, Lieutenant Maryk, with the support of the other officers. The court-martial that follows will decide the fate of the officers and the ship.
The film is noted for its realistic depiction of the Navy and its officers, and for its exploration of the moral and legal implications of a mutiny. It also features some of the most iconic performances of Humphrey Bogart’s career, including his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Captain Queeg.
The Caine Mutiny is a gripping and thought-provoking drama that remains one of the most acclaimed war films ever made.
