Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Breadwinner”
The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film directed by Nora Twomey and executive produced by Angelina Jolie. It is based on the novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis and tells the story of Parvana, an 11-year-old girl living in Afghanistan under the oppressive rule of the Taliban.
The film begins with Parvana and her family living in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father is a teacher and her mother is a seamstress. Despite the hardships of living under the Taliban, they are able to lead a relatively normal life. However, one day Parvana’s father is arrested by the Taliban for speaking out against them. With her father gone, the family is left in a desperate situation.
Parvana is determined to help her family and comes up with a plan to disguise herself as a boy so she can get a job and provide for her family. Her mother is initially hesitant, but eventually agrees to let Parvana go out and make money.
Parvana begins working in the market, selling goods to make money for her family. She soon meets a young boy named Shauzia who helps her navigate the market and teaches her about the world outside her family’s home.
Parvana’s disguise works well and she is able to provide for her family. However, she soon finds herself in danger when the Taliban discovers her secret. She is arrested and taken away, leaving her family in despair.
