Synopsis/Plot

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a 2019 drama film directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor based on the memoir of the same name by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The film follows young William Kamkwamba (Maxwell Simba) as he overcomes the odds to bring electricity and running water to his small Malawian village.

In 2001, William is a 13-year-old boy living in a small village in Malawi. He loves to spend his time tinkering and inventing, much to the chagrin of his father, Trywell (Chiwetel Ejiofor). When a severe drought hits the village, Trywell is forced to sell his cattle to pay for William’s school fees, leaving the family without a source of income. With no money to buy food, William and his family are forced to scavenge for scraps in order to survive.

Desperate to help his family, William begins to read books from the local library and discovers a way to use wind to generate electricity. With the help of his friend Gilbert (Aphiwe Nedomba) and his teacher (Joseph Marcell), William begins to construct a wind
