Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Bleeding Edge”
The Bleeding Edge is a 2018 documentary that takes a deep dive into the world of medical device technology. It follows the stories of four patients who have been affected by medical device malfunctions as well as the doctors, lawyers, and activists who are fighting to bring the truth to light.
The film begins with a brief overview of the medical device industry, and how it has grown exponentially in the past few decades. We then meet the four patients whose stories are the focus of the documentary. These include a woman whose hip implant caused her to suffer extreme pain and disability, a man whose metal-on-metal hip implant caused him to develop a rare and deadly form of cancer, a woman whose vaginal mesh implant caused her to suffer complications, and a man whose pacemaker malfunctioned and nearly killed him.
We then follow the stories of these four patients as they seek justice and compensation for their injuries. We also meet the doctors, lawyers, and activists who are fighting to bring the truth to light. These include a doctor who is trying to raise awareness of the potential dangers of medical devices, a lawyer who is advocating for the rights of the patients affected by medical device malfunctions, and an activist who is trying to bring about legislative reform.
