Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Birth of a Nation”
The Birth of a Nation, released in 1915, is a silent epic drama film directed by D.W. Griffith and based on Thomas Dixon Jr.’s novel The Clansman.
The film follows two families, the Stonemans and the Camerons, from the Civil War to the Reconstruction era. The Stonemans are a Northern family who are abolitionists. The Camerons are a Southern family who are slaveholders.
The film opens with the Stonemans and Camerons fighting in the Civil War. The Stonemans are fighting for the Union while the Camerons are fighting for the Confederacy. After the war, the Stonemans return to their home in the North while the Camerons return to their home in the South.
The Reconstruction era brings a new challenge for the Camerons as they are forced to accept the new laws of the Union. This leads to a clash between the two families as the Stonemans support the new laws while the Camerons oppose them.
The Camerons are forced into poverty and are threatened by the newly freed slaves. In an effort to protect their family, the Camerons form a secret society called the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan is formed to protect the white Southerners from the freed slaves.
The film follows the Klan as they fight against the Union forces and the freed slaves. The Klan is successful in their mission and the South is eventually restored.
