Synopsis/Plot
The Birdcage is a 1996 American comedy film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, and Hank Azaria. The film is a remake of the 1978 French film La Cage aux Folles.
The Birdcage follows the story of Armand Goldman (Robin Williams), the owner of a South Beach drag club called The Birdcage. Armand lives with his partner, Albert (Nathan Lane), a flamboyant, outrageous, and very effeminate drag queen. They have been together for many years and live a comfortable life in their South Beach home.
When Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), announces that he is engaged to the daughter of a very conservative Republican Senator (Gene Hackman), Armand and Albert are forced to pretend to be a heterosexual couple in order to please the Senator’s family.
The film follows the couple as they try to pull off the charade and deal with the cultural differences between themselves and the Senator’s family. The film is filled with hilarious moments as Armand and Albert try to navigate the situation and find common ground with the Senator’s family.
