Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Big Red One”
The Big Red One is a 1980 war drama directed by Samuel Fuller and starring Lee Marvin, Mark Hamill, and Robert Carradine.
The movie follows the story of a sergeant (Lee Marvin) and his squad of hardened World War One veterans as they fight their way through North Africa, Sicily, and Europe during World War II. The sergeant, known as the “Big Red One,” is a tough but fair leader who is determined to protect his men and get them home alive.
The movie begins with the squad landing in North Africa and quickly getting into a battle with a German tank unit. The squad is able to hold their own, but one of the members, Pvt. Griff (Mark Hamill), is injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The sergeant and his squad then make their way to Sicily, where they face off against German troops in the mountains and valleys. They are able to fight off the Germans and move on to Italy, where they take part in the bloody Battle of Anzio. Here, they are able to push the Germans back and eventually take the city.
The squad then makes their way to France, where they are tasked with liberating a small town from the Germans. After a fierce battle, the squad is able to take the town and move on to Germany. Here, they are able to take part in the Battle of the Bulge and eventually enter Germany.
