Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Big Country”
The Big Country is a 1958 American Western film directed by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Charles Bickford, and Carroll Baker.
The story follows James McKay (Gregory Peck) as he travels to the Wild West in search of a new life. After his arrival in the small town of New Mexico, he meets his future father-in-law, Major Henry Terrill (Charles Bickford). The Major is a wealthy rancher who is in conflict with another powerful rancher, Rufus Hannassey (Burl Ives). The two are competing for control of the valley’s valuable water rights.
McKay is determined to stay out of the fight, but is ultimately forced into it when the Major’s daughter, Julie (Jean Simmons), is kidnapped. He must now face the Hannassey clan and their hired guns in order to rescue Julie and protect the Major’s land.
The Big Country is a classic Western that follows the classic themes of courage, honor, and justice. In the end, McKay is able to save Julie and restore peace to the valley. Along the way, he is forced to confront his own fears and prejudices in order to stand up for what is right.
