Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is a 1982 musical comedy-drama directed by Colin Higgins. It tells the story of the Chicken Ranch, a small-town Texas brothel that has been operating since the 1850s. The film follows the adventures of Miss Mona (Dolly Parton), the madam of the ranch, and her longtime sheriff friend, Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds).
The film begins with a flashback to the early days of the Chicken Ranch when Miss Mona first bought the place. We then jump to the present day, where Miss Mona and Ed Earl have been running the place for years. Despite the occasional raids by the local police, the Chicken Ranch has managed to stay open and even become a popular tourist attraction.
However, their luck soon runs out when a crusading television reporter, Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom DeLuise), discovers the ranch and begins a campaign to shut it down. With the help of the governor (Charles Durning), Thorpe is able to pass a law making prostitution illegal in the state of Texas.
Faced with the prospect of having to close down the ranch, Miss Mona and Ed Earl come up with a plan to save the Chicken Ranch: they decide to turn it into a legitimate business by turning it into a cabaret. With the help of the governor, they are able to get the law overturned and the Chicken Ranch is saved.
