The film opens with the crew of the USS Bedford on patrol in the North Atlantic. Commander Wallace (Richard Widmark) is a hardened, cynical veteran of the Korean War who has a reputation for being a hard-nosed leader. His mission is to intercept a Soviet submarine and force it to surface.
Wallace’s crew includes Lieutenant Marko (Sidney Poitier), a young black officer who is eager to prove himself. Marko’s presence on the ship is met with some resistance from the crew, but Wallace is determined to make the mission a success.
The Bedford crew soon finds the Soviet submarine and begins to track it. Wallace’s orders are not to engage the submarine, but to follow it and report its position. However, when the submarine takes evasive maneuvers, Wallace orders the Bedford to pursue.
The Bedford crew soon finds itself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the submarine. Wallace is determined to force the submarine to surface, but the crew begins to doubt his orders. As tensions rise, Marko questions Wallace’s orders and the crew begins to question his judgment.
