Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Battle of the River Plate”
The Battle of the River Plate is a 1956 British war film based on the Battle of the River Plate, a World War II naval battle between the Royal Navy and the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. The film follows the story of the British naval forces led by Commodore Harwood, as they attempt to hunt down and destroy the German warship.
The film opens with a brief history of the events leading up to the battle, including the sinking of the British merchant ship, the Athenia, by the Graf Spee. The British Admiralty then orders Commodore Harwood to take his force of three cruisers, the Exeter, the Ajax and the Achilles, and hunt down the Graf Spee.
The British ships are soon spotted by the Germans, and a battle ensues. The British ships are heavily outgunned by the Graf Spee, and the Exeter is badly damaged. The British ships manage to escape, but the Graf Spee follows them into the neutral port of Montevideo.
The Graf Spee is forced to stay in the harbor for 72 hours, and the British forces use the time to prepare for a surprise attack. When the time limit expires, the Graf Spee attempts to leave the harbor, but is attacked by the British ships. The Graf Spee is severely damaged and is forced to scuttle itself.
The British forces are victorious and the Battle of the River
