Synopsis/Plot
The Banker is a 2020 drama film directed by George Nolfi and starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson. Based on a true story, the film follows two African American businessmen, Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), as they attempt to overcome racial barriers in the 1950s and 60s and become the first African American bankers on Wall Street.
The story begins in the 1950s, when Bernard and Joe are working as real estate agents in Los Angeles. Despite their ambition and talent, they are unable to get ahead due to the racism and segregation of the time. In order to break into the banking world, the two men devise an ingenious plan: they will hire a working-class white man, Matt Steiner (Nicholas Hoult), to act as the face of their business. With Matt in place, Bernard and Joe are able to buy and manage properties, eventually becoming the first African American bankers on Wall Street.
