Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Bang Bang Club”
The Bang Bang Club is a 2011 drama based on the true story of four South African photographers who documented the violence during the last days of apartheid in South Africa. It follows the lives of four photographers, Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva, as they risk their lives to capture the horrors of the conflict.
The movie begins in 1990, when the four photographers are working in Soweto, a township in Johannesburg. They document the violence and brutality of the apartheid government. The four men become known as the Bang Bang Club, a name they give themselves to reflect the danger and violence they face.
The movie follows the four photographers as they take photos of the violence and chaos of the apartheid regime. They become targets of the government and are constantly in danger. The four men are also struggling with the moral dilemma of documenting the violence and suffering of their fellow South Africans.
The movie also follows the personal lives of the four men. Kevin Carter struggles with depression and alcoholism, while Greg Marinovich is in a relationship with a journalist. Ken Oosterbroek is married and has a young son. João Silva is a single father, struggling to provide for his daughter.
The movie culminates in 1994, when the apartheid regime falls and Nelson Mandela is elected president. The four men are relieved, but also saddened that the violence and suffering they documented will never be forgotten.
