The movie begins with Rose, a missionary, living in Africa with her brother, Samuel. When World War I breaks out, Samuel joins the British Army and Rose is left alone to fend for herself. One day, a riverboat captain named Charlie Allnut arrives in town and agrees to take Rose to the nearest British outpost. Along the way, they face numerous obstacles such as rapids, German soldiers, and native tribes.
The two eventually bond over their shared experiences and Charlie begins to develop feelings for Rose. As their journey progresses, they come up with a plan to take on a German warship.
