Synopsis/Plot
Tess is a 1979 British period drama film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, and Leigh Lawson. It is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1891 novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
The film follows the life of Tess Durbeyfield, a young and beautiful peasant girl living in a small village in late 19th century England. Tess is the eldest daughter of a poor family, and when her father learns that they are related to the wealthy d’Urbervilles, he sends Tess to their estate in hopes of gaining financial assistance.
At the estate, Tess meets Alec d’Urberville, a handsome and charming young man. He seduces and impregnates her, and she is forced to leave her home and take a job as a milkmaid. Tess soon discovers that Alec is a cruel and selfish man, and she leaves him and returns home.
Tess eventually finds a new job and meets Angel Clare, a young man of higher social standing. The two fall in love and plan to marry, but Tess’s past catches up with her when Angel discovers the truth about her relationship with Alec.
