Synopsis – What to Expect from “Talk Radio”
Talk Radio is a 1988 American drama film directed by Oliver Stone, starring Eric Bogosian, Alec Baldwin, Leslie Hope, and John C. McGinley. The film is based on the play of the same name by Bogosian, which was based on the real-life story of controversial radio host Alan Berg.
The film follows the life of Barry Champlain (Bogosian), a late-night radio talk show host in Dallas, Texas. His show is popular and controversial, as he often pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable on the airwaves. Barry’s show is filled with heated debates and discussions about current events, and he often takes calls from his listeners, who are often angry and frustrated. He is also constantly at odds with his station manager, Dan Woodruf (Baldwin), who is constantly trying to censor him.
When Barry’s show is picked up by a larger station in Los Angeles, he moves there and continues to be successful. However, his on-air style begins to take a darker turn, as he starts to focus more on controversial topics and becomes increasingly confrontational with his callers. This leads to death threats and other forms of harassment from some of his listeners.
Barry’s confrontational style eventually leads to tragedy when he is gunned down by an unknown assailant outside of his studio. The film then follows the aftermath of Barry’s death, as his friends and family struggle to cope with the loss
