Synopsis – What to Expect from “Synecdoche, New York”
Synecdoche, New York is a 2008 drama film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Caden Cotard, a theatre director who is struggling to put on a play while dealing with his deteriorating mental health and his crumbling personal life.
Caden is a theatre director in Schenectady, New York who is struggling to make a name for himself in the theatre world. He is married to Adele, an artist, and has a young daughter named Olive. He is also struggling with his mental health, which is slowly deteriorating.
Caden decides to put on a play that will reflect his life and the lives of those around him. He rents a large warehouse and begins to construct a replica of New York City inside of it. He hires actors to play himself and the people in his life, and begins to direct the play.
As he works on the play, Caden’s mental health continues to decline. He begins to have hallucinations and delusions, and he begins to lose his grip on reality. He also begins to become obsessed with the play, and it starts to take over his life.
At the same time, Caden’s personal life begins to fall apart. His wife Adele leaves him and takes their daughter, and his relationships with his friends and colleagues become strained.
