Synopsis/Plot
Swing Kids is a 1993 drama directed by Thomas Carter and starring Robert Sean Leonard, Christian Bale, and Barbara Hershey. The movie follows the story of three German teenagers living in Hamburg during the Nazi regime of World War II. Peter Mueller (Leonard), Thomas Berger (Bale), and Arvid (Frank Whaley) are all members of the Hitler Youth, but they find themselves drawn to the jazz music of the Swing Kids, a group of teenagers who are passionate about swing music and dancing.
The Swing Kids are persecuted by the Nazi authorities, and Peter, Thomas, and Arvid must decide whether to join the Swing Kids and risk punishment or to remain loyal to the Hitler Youth. As the boys try to find a way to reconcile their love of swing music with their duty to the Nazi regime, they become embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the Gestapo.
The film follows the boys as they try to navigate the treacherous waters of Nazi Germany while still trying to remain true to their love of jazz music. With the help of a sympathetic American soldier, they attempt to find a way to express their love of swing without risking their lives.
