Synopsis – What to Expect from “Sweeney Todd”
Sweeney Todd is a 2006 musical drama film directed by Tim Burton and based on Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical of the same name. The film stars Johnny Depp as the titular character, a barber who is driven to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family by a corrupt judge.
The film opens in London, 1846. Benjamin Barker (Depp) is an upstanding barber who is wrongfully convicted of a crime and sent away to Australia on false charges by the corrupt and lecherous Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Fifteen years later, Barker returns to London under the new identity of Sweeney Todd and seeks revenge against Turpin.
He moves into a rundown barbershop above Mrs. Lovett’s (Helena Bonham Carter) pie shop. Mrs. Lovett tells him of Turpin’s past actions, and the two devise a plan to get revenge. With Mrs. Lovett’s help, Sweeney Todd begins to take out his revenge on Turpin by murdering his customers in the shop’s barber chair and disposing of the bodies in her meat pies.
Meanwhile, Turpin has arranged for the young sailor Anthony Hope (Jamie Campbell Bower) to marry his ward, Johanna (Jayne Wisener). Todd discovers that Johanna is his long-lost daughter and sets out to rescue her. After a series of violent confrontations, Todd ultimately kills Turpin and is
