Synopsis – What to Expect from “Summer of Sam”
Summer of Sam is a 1999 crime drama film set in the summer of 1977 in the South Bronx, New York. It follows a group of young people living in the Bronx, including Vinny (John Leguizamo), Ritchie (Adrien Brody), and Dionna (Mira Sorvino), who are trying to survive the oppressive heat and the violence that has broken out in their neighborhood.
The film begins with the news of the Son of Sam serial killer, who has been terrorizing the city. As the summer progresses, the police are unable to make any headway in their investigation, and the residents of the Bronx become increasingly paranoid and suspicious of each other.
Vinny, Ritchie, and Dionna try to keep their heads down and stay out of trouble, but that becomes increasingly difficult as the violence in the neighborhood escalates. Vinny, in particular, is faced with a difficult choice when he’s offered a job by a local mob boss, who is looking to capitalize on the chaos in the South Bronx. Vinny must decide whether to accept the job and risk his safety, or reject it and risk his financial security.
Meanwhile, Ritchie is drawn into a dangerous lifestyle, as he falls for a local girl named Ruby (Jennifer Esposito). He becomes involved in a dangerous street gang, and finds himself in the middle of a rivalry between two rival gangs.
