Synopsis – What to Expect from “Suddenly, Last Summer”
Suddenly, Last Summer is a 1959 drama film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift.
The movie follows Catherine Holly (Elizabeth Taylor), a young woman who is sent to a mental institution after the death of her cousin, Sebastian Venable (Montgomery Clift). Her aunt, Mrs. Venable (Katharine Hepburn), is determined to keep the truth about Sebastian’s death a secret.
When Dr. Cukrowicz (Albert Dekker), a psychiatrist, is brought in to evaluate Catherine, Mrs. Venable is determined to keep her from speaking the truth. However, Catherine’s story of Sebastian’s death is so horrible that Dr. Cukrowicz is determined to get to the bottom of it.
As Catherine tells her story, it is revealed that Sebastian was a homosexual and had been involved in a sadomasochistic relationship with a young man in Spain. In order to keep Sebastian’s death a secret, Mrs. Venable had bribed the young man to go away and never speak of it.
Catherine is determined to tell the truth, but Mrs. Venable is determined to keep her quiet. In a desperate attempt to keep the truth from coming out, Mrs. Venable arranges to have Catherine lobotomized. However, Dr. Cukrowicz is able to stop Mrs. Venable in time and save Catherine.
