Synopsis/Plot
Stronger is a 2017 biographical drama film directed by David Gordon Green and written by John Pollono, based on the memoir of the same name by Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman, a Boston Marathon bombing survivor who must adjust to a new normal after losing his legs in the attack.
The film begins with Jeff Bauman (Gyllenhaal) attending the 2013 Boston Marathon to cheer on his on-again-off-again girlfriend Erin Hurley (Tatiana Maslany). While at the race, two bombs detonate near the finish line, leaving Jeff severely injured and without his legs. The film then follows Jeff’s recovery, both physically and emotionally, as he struggles to adjust to his new life and the overwhelming support he receives from the city of Boston.
As he learns to walk with prosthetic legs and cope with the trauma of the attack, Jeff must also confront the guilt he feels for not being able to save Erin’s brother, who was killed in the bombing. With the help of his family and friends, Jeff slowly begins to accept his new reality and finds strength in the support of the Boston community.
