Synopsis – What to Expect from “Stop-Loss”
Stop-Loss is a 2008 American drama film directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Abbie Cornish. The film follows a group of U.S. soldiers who are sent back to Iraq after their tour of duty ends, due to the controversial policy known as “stop-loss”.
The film opens with a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq. Among them is Staff Sergeant Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe), a decorated war hero. Brandon is looking forward to returning home to his family and friends, but is soon informed that he has been “stop-lossed” and must go back to Iraq. He is devastated and refuses to go, but is forced to comply.
Back in Iraq, Brandon and his fellow soldiers are sent on a mission to take out a group of insurgents. The mission is successful, but Brandon is wounded in the process. After being medically discharged, he returns home to Texas.
Once home, Brandon is struggling to re-adjust to civilian life. He is haunted by the memories of war and feels isolated from the people around him. He also has difficulty dealing with the fact that he is now considered a “stop-lossed” soldier and is not allowed to re-enlist.
