Steel Magnolias is a 1989 American comedy-drama film directed by Herbert Ross. It stars an all-star cast including Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, and Tom Skerritt.
The movie is set in the small town of Chinquapin, Louisiana, and follows the lives of six women who are close friends. They meet regularly at Truvy’s beauty salon, where they share their joys and sorrows.
The main character is Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie (Julia Roberts), a young woman who is about to marry a local football star, Jackson Latcherie (Dylan McDermott). Shelby is a diabetic and her mother M’Lynn Eatenton (Sally Field) is worried about her health. Despite the risks, Shelby is determined to have a baby.
M’Lynn’s best friend is Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton), the owner of the beauty salon. Truvy is a cheerful, wise-cracking woman who is always ready to lend a hand. The other women who frequent the salon are Annelle Dupuy Desoto (Daryl Hannah), a shy newcomer; Clairee Belcher (Shirley MacLaine), a wealthy widow; and Ouiser Boudreaux (Olympia Dukakis), a cantankerous old woman.
