Synopsis – What to Expect from “Stay Hungry”
Stay Hungry is a 1976 comedy-drama film directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first major film role. The story follows a young, wealthy Southerner, played by Bridges, who moves to Birmingham, Alabama in order to purchase a gym and turn it into a fitness center.
The film begins with Bridges’ character, Charles “Charlie” Moore, arriving in Birmingham. He quickly meets two locals, Mary Tate and Joe Santo, and the three become friends. Charlie quickly falls in love with Mary and decides to purchase a rundown gym in order to make it into a fitness center. However, the gym is owned by a powerful businessman, Joe Santo, and Charlie must find a way to purchase it.
Meanwhile, Joe is involved in a shady real estate deal and is trying to buy up the entire neighborhood. He is also trying to get Mary to marry him, and she is not interested. Charlie and Joe soon become rivals for Mary’s affections, and Charlie begins to realize that Joe is not the man he thought he was.
Charlie and Joe eventually come to blows when Joe tries to sabotage Charlie’s plans for the gym. Charlie is able to save the gym, but he is unable to save Mary from Joe’s clutches. In the end, Charlie is able to purchase the gym and turn it into a successful business.
