Synopsis – What to Expect from “Starred Up”
Starred Up is a 2014 British drama film written by Jonathan Asser and directed by David Mackenzie. The movie follows the story of Eric Love (Jack O’Connell), a troubled 19-year-old who is transferred to an adult prison. Eric has a history of violent behavior and is immediately seen as a threat by the other inmates. He is assigned to Oliver (Rupert Friend), a therapist who is attempting to help Eric control his anger and adjust to his new environment.
Eric soon finds himself at odds with the prison’s rigid hierarchy. He clashes with the prison’s hard-nosed governor (Ben Mendelsohn) and is targeted by the prison’s most dangerous inmate (Peter Ferdinando). Eric also struggles to connect with his long-estranged father (Lennie James), who is also being held in the prison.
As Eric navigates the dangerous waters of the prison, he begins to develop a bond with Oliver. Oliver attempts to help Eric control his anger and find a way to survive in the prison. But Eric’s explosive temper and the prison’s violent culture continue to threaten to derail his progress.
The movie follows Eric as he struggles to survive in the prison and eventually comes to terms with his past. It is a powerful and gritty drama that shows the harsh realities of prison life and the difficulties of rehabilitation.
