Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is the first installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and the fourth installment in the Star Wars saga overall. The movie follows the journey of Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they protect Queen Amidala of Naboo from the Trade Federation. Along the way, they discover Anakin Skywalker, a young slave boy with a strong connection to the Force, and the two Jedi soon realize he is destined to bring balance to the Force.
The movie begins with a Trade Federation blockade of the planet Naboo. Queen Amidala and her people are forced to flee the planet, and the Jedi Knights are sent to negotiate a settlement. However, the negotiations are unsuccessful, and the Trade Federation launch a full-scale invasion of Naboo. The Jedi and Queen Amidala escape to the planet Tatooine, where they meet Anakin Skywalker, a young slave boy with an unusually strong connection to the Force. Qui-Gon Jinn believes Anakin is the chosen one who will bring balance to the Force, and decides to train him as a Jedi.
The Jedi and Queen Amidala eventually return to Naboo to face the Trade Federation. With the help of the Gungans, a native species of Naboo, they are able to defeat the Trade Federation and liberate the planet. Anakin also discovers his true identity as the son of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, and is tempted to join the dark side. However, Qui-Gon Jinn sacrifices himself to save Anakin, and Obi-Wan Kenobi takes over as his master. In the end, Anakin defeats Darth Maul, the Sith Lord sent by the Trade Federation, and brings balance to the Force.
