The movie follows the story of Escalante, a Bolivian immigrant who takes a job teaching math at Garfield High School, a predominantly Latino school in East Los Angeles. Despite the challenges, Escalante is determined to teach his students calculus, a subject that is traditionally reserved for college-level classes. He works with his students to help them understand the material and encourages them to take the Advanced Placement Calculus Exam.
The students are initially skeptical, but with Escalante’s help, they begin to excel in the subject. Despite the school administration’s skepticism, Escalante’s students are successful in passing the AP Calculus Exam with high scores.
