Synopsis/Plot
Spotlight is a 2015 American biographical drama film directed by Tom McCarthy and written by McCarthy and Josh Singer. The film follows The Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” team, the oldest continuously operating newspaper investigative journalist unit in the United States, and its investigation into cases of widespread and systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests. It stars an ensemble cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian d’Arcy James, Liev Schreiber, and Billy Crudup.
The film chronicles the efforts of the Spotlight team, led by editor Walter “Robby” Robinson, to shine a light on the widespread cover-up of child sex abuse within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. The team, made up of reporters Michael Rezendes, Sacha Pfeiffer, and Matt Carroll, comb through thousands of documents, interview victims, and pressure Church officials to reveal the extent of the scandal. The film follows the team’s dogged and often frustrating investigation, as they uncover a network of complicit clergy and Church officials who had protected the perpetrators for decades.
