Synopsis/Plot
Special Correspondents is a 2016 comedy directed by and starring Ricky Gervais. The film follows a struggling New York radio journalist, Frank (Gervais), and his technician, Ian (Eric Bana), as they fake their own kidnapping while covering a conflict in Ecuador.
When their boss, Carol (Vera Farmiga), refuses to send them to the dangerous region, Frank and Ian concoct a plan to make it look like they’ve been taken hostage. They rent a room in a hotel near the airport, and with the help of a local taxi driver, they broadcast false reports from Ecuador, sending Carol and their listeners into a frenzy.
As their lies become increasingly elaborate, the two men find themselves in deeper trouble than anticipated. With the help of a sympathetic local, they manage to stay one step ahead of their boss, but their situation becomes more precarious as they are pursued by a mysterious figure.
The film is a hilarious take on the dangers of fake news, and a commentary on the power of the media. With its sharp wit and clever dialogue, Special Correspondents is a lighthearted comedy that will leave audiences laughing.
