Synopsis/Plot
Speak is a 2004 American drama film based on the novel of the same name by Laurie Halse Anderson. The film follows the story of Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman who is ostracized by her peers after calling the police to break up a party. After the traumatic event, Melinda withdraws from her friends and family, and struggles to cope with her guilt and the ostracism she faces.
The film follows Melinda as she tries to find her place in the world, while also dealing with the trauma of her past. She finds solace in her art class, and begins to express her feelings through her drawings. As she slowly begins to open up to her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, she finds the strength to confront her past and start to rebuild her life.
The film stars Kristen Stewart as Melinda and Steve Zahn as Mr. Freeman. It also features supporting performances from Elizabeth Perkins, D.B. Sweeney, and Eric Lively. The film was well-received by critics, and won several awards, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
