Spartacus is an epic historical drama from 1960, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas. The film follows the story of Spartacus, a Thracian slave who leads a revolt against the Roman Empire.
The story begins in 73 BC, when Spartacus is sold into slavery and sent to the gladiator training school of Lentulus Batiatus. He quickly rises to the top of the training school and is eventually sold to a Roman general, Marcus Crassus.
When Spartacus learns of a prophecy that a slave will lead a revolt against Rome, he begins to plan a rebellion. He and a group of fellow gladiators escape from the school and join forces with the local slaves.
The Romanarmy is sent to quash the rebellion, led by Marcus Crassus and his lieutenant, Julius Caesar. The Roman forces prove to be no match for Spartacus and his men, and the revolt spreads across the Roman Empire.
The Roman Senate is forced to negotiate with Spartacus, and they eventually agree to free all of the slaves if they will lay down their arms. Spartacus agrees, but is betrayed and crucified by the Romans.
The film ends with a speech by Spartacus, in which he declares that his death will be remembered and his spirit will live on. The film is seen as a powerful statement against slavery and oppression.
