Synopsis – What to Expect from “South Pacific”
South Pacific is a 1958 American romantic musical film directed by Joshua Logan and based on the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name. It stars Mitzi Gaynor, Rossano Brazzi, John Kerr, and Ray Walston.
The film is set in the South Pacific during World War II, and tells the story of an American nurse named Nellie Forbush who is stationed on a tropical island. She falls in love with a middle-aged French plantation owner named Emile de Becque, but their relationship is threatened by the racism of the local community.
The film opens with Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) arriving on the island of Bali Hai, where she is to serve as a nurse in the U.S. Navy. She meets the island’s French plantation owner, Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi), and they quickly fall in love. However, their relationship is threatened by the racism of the local community, who view Emile as an outsider.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy is preparing to launch a major offensive against the Japanese, and they need the help of the local islanders. Nellie and Emile help to recruit the islanders, and they eventually join the fight against the Japanese.
