Synopsis – What to Expect from “Soul Man”
Soul Man is a 1986 comedy-drama film directed by Steve Miner and starring C. Thomas Howell, Rae Dawn Chong, Arye Gross, James Earl Jones, and Leslie Nielsen.
The movie follows Mark Watson (Howell), a white pre-med student who is desperate to get into Harvard Law School. With his parents unable to afford the tuition, Mark comes up with a plan to pose as an African American student and receive a scholarship. With the help of his best friend, Gordon (Gross), Mark dyes his skin and sets out to convince the admissions board that he is the perfect candidate for the scholarship.
The plan works, and Mark is accepted into Harvard, but he soon discovers that he is in over his head. His newfound friends from the African American community are suspicious of his identity, and he is constantly struggling to keep up with the rigorous academic demands of the school. Meanwhile, he must also deal with his parents, who are increasingly confused and worried about their son’s behavior.
As the semester progresses, Mark finds himself becoming more and more involved in the African American community, and he begins to understand the struggles and challenges that they face. He also grows closer to his new friends, and learns to appreciate the culture and heritage of his classmates.
