Synopsis – What to Expect from “Sometimes a Great Notion”
Sometimes a Great Notion tells the story of the Stamper family, a small logging community in Oregon. The Stamper family is led by Henry Stamper (Henry Fonda), a gruff and stubborn patriarch who is determined to keep his family’s logging business afloat despite the increasing mechanization of the industry. Henry’s sons, Hank (Paul Newman) and Lee (Lee Majors), have grown up in the family business and have a deep respect for their father, but they are increasingly frustrated by his refusal to modernize and to accept help from outside sources.
When Henry’s brother, Joe (Richard Jaeckel), returns to the family after a long absence, Henry is forced to confront his own stubbornness and consider the possibility of accepting help from others. Joe and Hank form an uneasy alliance to help the family business, while Lee is determined to prove to his father that he can make it on his own.
Meanwhile, the townspeople are divided in their opinions of the Stampers, with some supporting their efforts to stay independent and others wanting them to accept help from outside sources. As tensions mount, the Stampers must ultimately decide if they are willing to put aside their pride and accept help from others in order to survive.
When tragedy strikes, the family must come together to find strength and courage in the face of adversity. Ultimately, the Stampers must learn that sometimes a great notion, like accepting help from others, is the only way
