Synopsis/Plot
Something the Lord Made is a 2004 HBO biopic directed by Joseph Sargent, starring Mos Def and Alan Rickman.
The film tells the story of the real-life partnership between pioneering African-American heart surgeon Dr. Alfred Blalock (Mos Def) and his assistant, lab technician Vivien Thomas (Alan Rickman). The two men, working in the 1940s, achieved a medical breakthrough when they developed a procedure to correct the congenital heart defect known as “blue baby syndrome”.
The film follows Blalock and Thomas as they overcome challenges and prejudice to make a lasting impact on the medical field. Blalock, a white man, is initially reluctant to work with Thomas, a black man, but eventually comes to appreciate his skill and dedication. Together, the two men develop a revolutionary procedure that saves countless lives.
The film also explores the personal relationship between Blalock and Thomas, as well as the racism and segregation of the era. Blalock and Thomas’s friendship is tested when Thomas is denied recognition for his contributions to the medical field due to his race.
The film features a strong cast, including Mos Def and Alan Rickman in the lead roles
