Synopsis – What to Expect from “Soldier’s Girl”
Soldier’s Girl is a 2003 drama film directed by Frank Pierson and starring Troy Garity, Lee Pace, and Shawn Hatosy. The movie tells the story of the tragic romance between Barry Winchell, a soldier in the U.S. Army, and Calpernia Addams, a transgender entertainer.
The film begins in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where Private Barry Winchell is stationed. He meets Calpernia Addams, a transgender entertainer, at a local bar and is instantly smitten. The two begin a romantic relationship, but Barry’s fellow soldiers soon find out and harass him for it.
When Barry’s superior officer, Sergeant First Class Justin Fisher, discovers the relationship, he orders Barry to break it off. However, Barry refuses and the harassment continues. Eventually, the harassment becomes so unbearable that Barry transfers to another base.
Meanwhile, Calpernia is struggling with the discrimination she faces as a transgender woman. She is not accepted by her family and is often the target of discrimination and violence.
Barry and Calpernia reunite at a transgender support group and continue their relationship. However, the harassment and discrimination they face continues to grow. Eventually, the harassment takes a deadly turn when Barry is murdered by a fellow soldier.
