Synopsis – What to Expect from “Snow Falling on Cedars”
Snow Falling on Cedars is a 1999 drama set in the 1950s in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. The story follows Ishmael Chambers, a newspaper reporter struggling to come to terms with the death of his childhood sweetheart, Hatsue Imada.
The movie begins with Ishmael attending the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese American accused of murdering Carl Heine, a local fisherman. Ishmael is the only one who believes Kabuo is innocent, and he soon discovers that the evidence against Kabuo is circumstantial.
The trial brings up a lot of unresolved feelings for Ishmael, as he had been in love with Hatsue, Kabuo’s wife, since they were children. He remembers how they had grown up together, and how their love was forbidden by their parents because of the racism and prejudice of the time.
Ishmael is determined to uncover the truth, and he begins to investigate the case. He discovers that Carl Heine’s boat had been damaged, and that Kabuo had been seen near the scene of the crime. He also discovers that Kabuo had a motive for killing Carl, as the two men had been involved in a dispute over fishing rights.
Ishmael’s investigation leads him to uncover a secret from his own past, one that could prove Kabuo’s innocence. He realizes that Hatsue had been keeping a secret from him, and
