Synopsis – What to Expect from “Smoke”
Smoke is a 1995 American independent drama film written and directed by Paul Auster and starring Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stockard Channing.
The film follows the lives of several characters in Brooklyn, New York, and how their lives intersect with one another. Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) is the proprietor of a small tobacco shop in Brooklyn. He is a loner who has a special bond with the customers who frequent his shop. One day, a young writer named Paul Benjamin (William Hurt) enters the shop and Auggie takes an immediate liking to him.
Paul has recently been released from prison and is trying to put his life back together. He has no money and no place to stay, so Auggie takes him in. As the two men get to know each other, they form an unlikely friendship.
Meanwhile, Auggie’s neighbor, Rashid (Giancarlo Esposito), is a drug dealer and gang leader who has a strong influence over the neighborhood. He is also the father of Ruby (Ashley Judd), a young girl who has a crush on Paul.
As the story progresses, the lives of the characters become more intertwined. Auggie and Paul’s friendship deepens, and Paul begins to write a book about Auggie’s life. Rashid’s business dealings become more dangerous, and his relationship with Ruby is strained. Auggie
